Science at the Market
I spent a chilly morning with the Graduates in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the Urbana Farmer's Market to educate the local community about some of our backyard species. The demonstration included local bird and mammal specimens, as well as live reptiles! Outreach with University Elementary
Students from University Elementary (grades 2-5) visited the department's teaching collection for their self-elected theme, Birds and Flight. I teamed up with fellow grad students Nick Sly and Dan Urban to show them the diversity of birds that they can find in Illinois and afar. Backyard Ecology at the Urbana Free Library
I joined fellow Graduates in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology to teach young Urbanites about their backyard ecology! We brought local birds, mammals, herps, fish, insects, plants, fungi, and even daphnia to share. We had a great turn out, with children ages 2-10 excited to learn about what they can find in their own backyards. They were especially amazed by the Belted Kingfisher's long bill and the Eastern Bluebird's blue eggs! Science Night at South View Middle School
The Cheviron lab joined over 30 graduate students from UIUC to teach Danville middle schoolers how we do science. We brought specimens, photos, and recordings of local Illinois birds, as well as the equipment that ornithologists use in the field for our "Birds of a Feather" activity. This event was featured in the local news and I scored a photo with our kingfisher in the I-STEM coverage. |
